Running this app

  • This app runs on desktop or mobile.
  • You can access this app by selecting the "Open White Noise" button above. Once the app is open you can also install a local version of the app called a "PWA" if you want a shortcut to it on your desktop or mobile device. Alternatively, you can download this app as an HTML file to open offline.
  • Sound keeps playing with your screen off or your computer display asleep. On a phone, it shows on your lock screen like music, where you can pause it.

Internet access

  • Only required to open or download the app. Every sound is inside the app, so nothing is streamed and it plays with no connection at all.

Data

  • This app stores nothing and sends nothing about you. It has no settings to save, and once it is open it needs nothing more from the internet.

Licence

  • MIT: use it for anything, including at work. Keep the copyright notice and licence text with any copy you pass on. Read the licence
  • Built with, and containing: Fireplace Sound loop, by PagDev (CC0). Their licences ship inside the downloaded file.

How to use it

  1. Open the app and tap a sound. It fades in and its button gets a white outline.
  2. Tap other sounds to layer them, for example rain with the fireplace.
  3. Tap a sound again to fade it out.
  4. Set your volume, then lock your phone or let your screen sleep. The sound carries on until you stop it.

Worth knowing

  • Apart from the fireplace, the sounds are synthesised rather than recorded. That keeps the app small and free of copyright, but they are impressions of rain or the sea rather than recordings of them.
  • If you unplug your headphones, the sound pauses rather than switching to your speaker. Press play on your lock screen or tap a sound to carry on.
  • iPhone and iPad: background playback is most reliable in Safari itself. Some iOS versions pause web audio from a home-screen app when the screen locks; if that happens, open it in Safari instead.
  • A sound takes a moment to prepare the first time you tap it, while your device makes it. After that it starts instantly.
