Airplane Arcade

Thirty-eight games that work with no connection, made for a flight. Word games like Six (guess the hidden word, with every word playable rather than one a day), Anagrams, Letter Hive and Word Search. Puzzles like Sudoku, Killer Sudoku, Nonograms, Mines, Bridges and Water Sort, each generated fresh and checked to have an answer. Quick games like 2048, Gem Swap, Tile Trio, Bubble Pop, Merge Drop and Stack. Solitaire (Klondike, FreeCell and Spider), Mahjong, Chess, Checkers, Reversi and more against the computer or a friend. No ads, no lives, no waiting, no account.

Running this app

  • This app runs on desktop or mobile, and is laid out for a phone held upright.
  • You can access this app by selecting the "Open Airplane Arcade" button above. Once the app is open you can also install a local version of the app called a "PWA" if you want a shortcut to it on your desktop or mobile device. Alternatively, you can download this app as an HTML file to open offline.
  • Install it, or download it, before you board: a browser tab can't load anything at 35,000 feet. Once installed, every game works with no connection.

Internet access

  • Only required to open, install or download the app. Every game works with no connection.

Data

  • Your scores, statistics and games in progress stay on your device, in your browser. There is no account, and none of it is sent to us or anyone else.
  • When you first make progress, the app asks your browser not to clear its data automatically if your device runs low on space; the browser decides, and "Your progress and backup" on the home screen shows its answer. Clearing your browser's site data yourself still erases your progress, so save a backup file there if you want to keep it.
  • Restoring a backup reads the file on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Open the app and pick a game from the home screen. They are grouped into Words, Logic puzzles, Quick play, and Cards and board games.
  2. Each game has a ? button with its rules, and most have a Hint. A failed level is simply tried again: there are no lives and no waiting.
  3. Games against the computer have Easy, Medium and Hard, or two players on one device.
  4. Your progress saves as you play. "Your progress and backup", at the bottom of the home screen, saves or restores a backup file.

Worth knowing

  • Not every Klondike deal can be won; that's true of Klondike itself. FreeCell deals almost always can. The puzzles that are generated (Sudoku, Killer Sudoku, Nonograms, Bridges, Tents, Mines with No guessing on, Water Sort, Car Park, Mahjong, Tile Trio) are all checked to have an answer.
  • The word games accept any word in a large public-domain word list, which includes some obscure words. The words they ask you to find, and every answer in Six, come from shorter lists of common words.
  • Held sideways, a phone shows "Turn your phone upright" over a game, since the boards are laid out for portrait. Tablets and computers can use either way.
  • Chess on Hard thinks for about a second per move, and on a slow phone the screen may not respond for a moment while it does.
  • Your progress lives in one browser on one device. The installed app, the downloaded HTML file and another browser each keep their own; use the backup file to move it.
